Abstract
Due to the plans to construct a connecting road between the western periphery of Petrinja and the bridge over the Kupa river in Brest, the route was surveyed and test-excavated. There were no known archaeological sites on the route prior to these works. The route of the connecting road passes over a gentle elevation south of the Kupa river, while it ends at the foot of the northern slopes of Mount Petrova Gora. The investigations revealed a prehistoric site, AS 1 Petrinja-Žnica, which can be attributed to the Late Iron Age (3rd-1st cent. BC) society of the Colapiani based on the ceramic finds. The interface layer of topsoil and virgin soil yielded several microliths, which cannot be dated with any degree of precision, other than belonging to a wider context of Late Stone or Copper Age. However, taking into consideration the position of the site, the finds could probably be attributed to the Lasinja culture. Rescue excavations of the AS 1 PetrinjaŽnica site, coupled by the future excavations in that area, will provide new insight into the habitation patterns of the lower Pokuplje area, which lies on an important communication route connecting the northern Adriatic area with south-western Pannonia.
