Abstract

This analysis of Novela od Stanca (The Dream of Stanac), the only comedy in verse by Marin Držić preserved in its entirety, examines the flexibility of the genre, the parallels between comedic discourse and the rhetoric of law, and Držić’s focus on the most vulnerable sociopolitical aspects of city life. This focus reveals the ability of theatrical modes to encourage viewers to cross the threshold between aesthetic and non-aesthetic experience, and therefore also empower identity transformation. The subsuming of thresholds enabled by the Renaissance inversive carnival principle is also discussed in relation to the subversiveness that becomes explicit in the relationship between Novela od Stanca (The Dream of Stanac) and Držić’s conspiratorial letters.
