Abstract

In this article we set out from the idea that culture is a complex phenomenon which is impossible to defi ne unambiguously. Popular culture and popular music also represent very vague conceptual categories which, depending on the context of the use, embrace a great number of different categories. Setting out from the essencialistic and nonessencialistic definitions of identity (Woodward, 1997), the authors examine the constitution of music identities based on the references such as the race and gender, and conclude that in the consideration of music identities we must move from the essencialistic ideas toward the point of view that music identities are not fixed, but they are actively created by means of certain communication processes, social practices and articulations.
