Abstract

The purpose of triage is to identify priority patients with life threatening conditions
and to reassure and carry prompt and efficient medical care.
There are numerous triage scales , and the most common is Austral – Asian triage scale
(ATS) which is further divided into five categories. Triage nurses and medical technicians
should have significant years of experience in Emergency Department. Emergency department
(ED) utilization has increased over last years, leading towards ED overcrowding, mostly
by non-urgent patients, which could have been dealt with by general practitioner (GP).
Therefore, the purpose of triage is to decrease ED overcrowding by ing non-urgent patients
from those in life threatening condition.
