The article is based on the research conducted regarding school religious education initiated by the Council od European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE) at the request and support of the Italian Conference of Bishops (CEI). The collected information from 29+4 nation reports gives a detailed account of the position of catholic school religious education in Europe. The research data was recently published in a book. This article gives a brief survey of the status and characteristics of school religious education as it is portrayed in the final research document. Denominational school religious education is the most present in Europe. In most countries there is a clear distinction between school religious education and parish catechesis although their interconnection is also emphasized. School religious education is an outstanding contribution to formation and education in a pluralistic Europe. This is due to the many well educated and formed religious educators, who continue to recieve formation in their field.
