Abstract
Although the oral cavity is a favorable area for the early diagnosis of pathological alterations, and especially carcinoma, time is still loss between establishment of a precise diagnosis and the beginning of treatment. This problems stimulated the authors to examine the reliability of exfoliative cytology in the diagnosis of benign, suspicious malignant and clinically undefined pathological changes in this region. Two hundred and twenty patients were examined and 232 smears were obtained by the standard technique. Of 77 patients with clinicaly suspicious lesions, histopathology confirmed a malignant tumor in 58. Malignant cells were found by cytology in 46 patients and suspicious cells in 3. There were 7 false negatives and the smear was inadequate
for analysis in 2. The accuracy of cytology was 85.5%. Fifty-eight percent of the tumors began in the sublingual region, and 79% were found in the region shown schematically as a horseshow. The authors believe that good desquamation of oral cavity cells and the favorable clinical possibility of localizing lesions are positive conditions for using cytology in the diagnosis of invasive carcinoma and the early detection of premalignant and early malignant alterations.
