Abstract

Tested was the precision with which dimensions of the crown-pulpa cavity are recorded on x-ray photographs. Examined were 146 extracted molars, the prerequisite being uno-pened pulpa cavities with clearly distinguishable contours. Based upon the von Hoppe developed method for front teeth, the examination proceeded as follows: 1. Under simulated conditions in the oral cavity (x-ray quality, scattered rays, distances), an x-ray photograph was taken of the tooth, set in exact orthoradial direction to the x-r beam. 2. The crowns were filed on buccal and lingual sides (2-3 mm). A second photograph was taken, using substance-testing film and long-range photography. 3. The positives in the 1st and 2nd series were enlarged for the purpose of taking measurements. Comparison of the two typs of photographs showed part significant, part insignificant, variations between the photographic originals and the clinical findings. Discrepancies were found in the rendition of the pulpacavity horn. Longitudinal differences in the upper molars measured up to 0.57 mm mesial and up to 0.45 mm on the dista-pulpa horn. Differences in the lower molars measured up to 0.44 mm mesial and 0.34 mm distal. The application of statistical methods on the collected data resulted in a line of progression, with which the true dimensions of the pulpa-cavity could be ascertained. The expected dimensional variations were also determined through application of the correct formula. The experimental values may appear at first glance insignificant, falling within the boundaries necessary for protection of the pulpa from traumatic injury, during preparation of the teeth. But, in fact, evolution of the x-ray photographs, taken under optimal conditions, points up significantly diminished renderings of the pulpae-cavity.
