Abstract

The authors review the results of their investigation on the application of Terra-Cortril Gel paste in the treatm ent of parodontal pockets, wich they performed by instillation of factory-prepared sterile mass in the original syringes. The number of applications varied, most frequently two to three applications were made in intervals of 24 hours. The simultaneous application of Terra-Cortril and placebo and objective assessment of the therapy by means of the FK-test enabled to distinguish between the effects of Terra-Cortril Gel application and that of other factors. There were 186 test subjects (79 men and 107 women) ranging in age from 10 to 75 years. Only inflam m atory form s of parodontopathies were taken fo r the investigation. Prior to instillation of the antibiotic cortisone paste the follow ing steps were taken to prepare the parodontium : deep rining of the pockets, electrocauterisation of the gingiva and curettage. In the control group only some inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa were treated. The general success of the treatm ent for parodontopathies of inflammatory genesis in 129 patients, gave very good results in 40 cases, improvement was seen in 82 cases, while in 7 the therapy did not give any changes. The treatment of oral mucosa diseases tested in 57 patients yielded very good results in 10 cases, improvement in 24 and no changes at ali in 23 patients. The effect of Terra-Cortril Gel and placebo on 12 patients with inflammation of the parodontium,
marked by the degree of fragiIity of the gingival capillaries, showed statisticaIly a significant improvement after application of Terra-Cortril Gel. Reviewing these results the authors conclude that deep pockets in parodontopathies of inflammatory genesis, where infection is the main etiologic factor are suitable fo r instillatio n of Terra-Cortril Gel because the deposit is not quickly rinsed away by saliva. Reversely, tretmant of ulcerations of the oral mucosa does not show such favourable efects because of topographical reasons and because o f the etiologic factors of these ulcerations which are frequently of non-bacterial etiology.
