Abstract

Using standard time periods (the period before World War I, the interwar period, the postwar period) the author treats certain significant aspects of the emigration of Macedonians from the Aegean region to Australia. In this context the Macedonian emigrants from the mentioned part of Greece are divided into the categories of economic migration (pečalbari) and refugees. The latter category was the result of national suppression of Macedonians during the Turkish domination, and also of the occupation of this region and a similar attitude of the Greek regime, especially after the civil war in this country. Furthermore, the author gives special attention to the problems of settlement, the reasons and models of association (confessional and other groups), and to the perspectives of the Macedonian ethnic community in Australia, composed of immigrants and their descendants from the Socialist Republic of Macedonia, Aegean and Pirin Macedonia.
