Determination of Contact Angle and Work of Adhesion in Molten Steel - Ceramic Material System
M. Holtzer
Abstract
The results of the studies on the wettability of silica - based ceramic material by liquid steel were presented. The surface tension of this steel grade was also measured. For measurements of surface tension and contact angle the sessile drop method was used. The values of the surface tension and contact angle obtained were then used for calculation of the work of adhesion. The examinations were made using cylindrical specimens of dimensions F 3.5x3.5 mm, weighing 0.2-0.3 g. Throughout the measurement high purity helium was passed through the furnace. The measurements were carried out over the temperature range of 1848-1923 K at every 25 K step. The effect of oxygen, present as a surface component in this grade of steel, on the value of surface tension was also investigated.
