Abstract

The paper presents and evaluates the literary work of Josip Gržetić and portrays his curriculum vitae. Living and working in the 19th century, at the time of the Croatien national renaissance, in the Austrian provinces Istria and Dalmatia, Gržetić in his poems, short stories and the novel »Urotnici« (Conspirators) had realized ali the literary characteristics of his era, Pointing out to his national and patriotic orientation and stvlistic procedures of the school of romanticism, Gržetić in his prose word gradually makes known some characteristics of realism. Like many other writers of the time in Dalmatia and Istria, Gržetić, too, has not so far been observed in the literary and historical sense. This paper presents him as a typical and important literary man of the regions in which he was living and working.
