Abstract

Reminding the readers of the eightieth birthday of the world’s leading expert in polymeric technology, Professor Georg Menges, the present author describes his activity and influence on the development of education and research in this field since 1965, when he started to work as a university lecturer and director of the Institute for Polymer Processing (Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung, IKV) in Aachen. At the beginning of his career the use of plastic and rubber products began to expand dramatically. The expansion was primarily caused by improvements in plastic processing procedures, based on our knowledge of the design of polymeric products. His concept, uniting the construction, material technology and production, proved successful and became the basis of university education and research in the field of polymeric technology, not only in Federal Republic of Germany. Professor Menges’ dictum research for praxis was widely adopted by specialists in the field throughout the world.
