Abstract

This paper examines and describes the importance which the theatre had in a cultural and social life in Zagreb during the First World War. The research is based on the theatre criticism published in the German-speaking and Croatian-speaking newspapers, which were edited in Zagreb in this period. The first part of the text describes the emergence of the true cultural mania, a new cultural renaissance and the importance of the theatre as the most important cultural institute of the war time in Zagreb. The second part of the text analyses and points out the contrast between the bad finacial status of the theater actors and the great moral importance which the actors played in the social life. In the third part the text examines the characteristics of theatre programme of the Croatian national theatre in Zagreb and its relation to the cultural identity of Habsburg Monarchy during the First World War.
