Abstract

This paper will focus on particular events between 1963 and 1973 in which the Croatian diaspora community in Australia was directly or indirectly involved and which caused it to have a troubled relationship with the host country, a distinguishing factor of diasporas, especially stateless diasporas. The chain of events include two military incursions into Yugoslavia (1963 and 1972), Australian state and security direct intervention into the lives of ordinary Croatians and the subsequent Senate Select Committee Inquiry of the Australian Federal Parliament in 1973 to investigate Croatian claims of discrimination. The Croatian diaspora civil rights grievances were aired through the National Croatian Civil Rights Committee which transcended internal Croatian diaspora differences.
