Abstract

Metal foams are a new type and form of material which posses a high porosity. Their structure is one of the most important prerequisites which determine the properties and application possibilities. The shape of the structure and its influence on the properties have not been fully studied especially when it comes to new production techniques that are still not fully developed and quantitatively described. Therefore, the management of processes is not fully mastered. This paper is a contribution to the understanding of the influence of the foaming temperature on the morphology of metal foams since the properties are primarily affected by changing the parameters of the production process. Structural parameters, such as the volume fraction of cells, size, shape and distribution of cells and thickness and hardness of cell walls were quantified. The quantification of structural parameters was performed using several stereological methods which showed similar results. Understanding the influence of the foaming temperature on the structure of metal foam creates opportunities for the achievement of better properties and consequently greater commercial use.
