Abstract
From the manifold aspects dealt with by Friedrich Nietzsch, here we are dealing with only his understanding of art. Commencing with Greek tradition he divides pre-Socratic philosophy into Dionese and Apollonic elements, and finds that tragedy has its origin in the spirit of the music of Greek choirs. He concludes that life is much too cruel and senseless, and that life consists in an eternal returning to the starting point and therefore we never truly attain the truth. This returning is at the same time a remedy for the cruelty of truth in life. Art and culture will best embellish our lives and thus prevent us from breaking down because of the truth.
