Abstract
Cases of intoxication with the root of the deadly nightshade are well known but knowledge of intoxication with the fruit is scarce. Intoxication with the scopola root has not been known at all. The scopola root and deadly nightshade contain the same alkaloids, only in a different ratio. The paper deals with a case of family poisoning with the scopola root which was mistaken for parsley and used to make soup. Microscopic analysis showed the root to be one of scopola. Dried root contains about 0.49% of the alkaloids hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine in approximately equal percentages. Symptoms of poisoning were typical of the poisoning with the alkaloids (hyoscyamine, atropine, scopolamine). AIl the persons poisoned recovered without any special treatment.
