Abstract
Cholestasis indicates stagnation of bile, a disorder in the synthesis, secretion and/or outfl ow of bile. Cholestasis is classified as intrahepatic or extrahepatic. Intrahepatic cholestasis may occur as a result of hepatocellular disorders or due to obstruction of the intrahepatic bile ducts. Extrahepatic cholestasis is caused by obstruction of the bile ducts outside the liver. Cholestasis manifests as acute or chronic (>6 months).
