Abstract

By examining three basic theses about the relationships of eastern and western religions and political institutions during modernization, the author shows that, first, religion is, historically, everywhere a significant participant in the integration of political communities, and a factor of ethnomobilization processes in contemporary times. Second, she shows that the thesis that modernization process will limit religion, by secularization, to the private sphere, does not hold. Third, she shows that the contemporary interaction of the sacred and everyday (Hi profane) in the modernization processes in the Third world, exhibit a complex and typologically diverse structure.
