Abstract

External manifestations which accompanied the phenomenon termed »energy crisis« hid real causes of its emergence, which is a lag in technological development as compared with the development of consumption in the contemporary industrial society. All the technologies currently being in widest commercial application (transportation, chemistry, metallurgy, energetics, agriculture) were developed in the period of »cheap« energy and they are characterized by low energy efficiency.
The only criterion which was applied in the development, selection, evaluation and commercial application of new technologies was the rate of profit. It came to be evident that the criterion was unreliable and that it was leading toward wrong conclusions, if not applied within a set of wider, more complex criteria, as the energy efficiency of a technological process, ecological consequences of the application, societal acceptability, etc.
A radical shift is therefore needed in the technological development with respect to the principal sectors of human activity. It will be accomplished only in the case of adoption of complex criteria for the selection and evaluation of new technologies.
