Abstract

Ventilatory lung function was· examined in three groups of boys and girls from an elementary school Jiving in three areas at different distances from a source of atmospheric pollution (a cement plant). The investigation was carried out in March 1980 and again in March 1981 in the same children. The measurements included forced expiratory volumes in 0.75 and 1.0 second. The latter volume was expressed as a percentage of the normal values. Concurrently with ventilatory measurements the concentrations of airborne particles and sulphates were determined in the air near the location of the elementary school. The results showed the mean values of the measured forced expiratory volumes to be associated with the degree of atmospheric pollution with air, borne particles and sulphates.
