Abstract

The review of the mother’s posture during childbirth in primitive peoples and during development of civilization is presented. The advantages and shortcomings of particular maternal positions are exposed: of the reccumbent posture, of different upright positions (standing, walking, squatting, knelling) and of water birth. There is no difference between recumbent and upright postures regarding the maternal events and neonatal outcome, except of higher rate of episiotomies in recumbent position. The water-birth seems to bee shorter and less painful, otherwise the maternal and neonatal outcome does not differ in relation to the recumbent posture.
