Abstract

Annual production of mandarins (tangerine) in the Neretva valley (the main breeding area of Croatia), reach an average of about 40,000 tons, and in the some years can reach up to 50,000 tons. The total production of mandarins covers the needs of Croatian market; part is exported to the European market, but on average occurs about 12,000 tons of surpluses. The surplus is due to delays in the harvest or the purchase and sale which are not adapted to market conditions. Since in this case is not about the planned purpose production of mandarins for processing, the amount of raw materials from year to year may vary significantly. Such circumstances are adaptable for fruit smaller processing units, located near the production areas, which can operate in the context of family farms and cooperatives, and produce a variety of products from the fruits of mandarin. For mandarin growers it can open up new opportunities for self-employment and be an additional source of income.
