Abstract
Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is a highly valued plant which can be used in medicine, food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and textile industry and in the organic gardening as an insecticide or fertilizer. Due to the increasing demand and its limited plant resources there is a need to introduce stinging nettle into agricultural production. However, the cultivation techniques and optimum dose of nitrogen fertilization have not yet been enough explored. The vegetation trial was laid out according to split-plot method in eight replications. Growing technology of stinging nettle (direct sowing, seedlings) and different levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 kg N/ha) were tested. Direct sowing in pots and polystyrene containers for seedlings production was done on March 22nd and the planting was on May 29th. During the preliminary research in the first year of cultivation two cutting treatments were conducted and morphological parameters (number of branches/plant, weight and height of plants, number of nodes, the number and size of leaves) were measured. Contrary to the literature as a recommended growing technology of stinging nettles direct sowing can be extract. As an optimum dose of nitrogen fertilization 150 kg N/ha could be recommend.
However, due to poor plant growth in the first year it would be necessary to repeat and expand the research in the open field.
