Abstract
There has been a trend in recent years to improve in vitro cell and tissue culture, to revise current methods in the purpose of increasing genetic improvement of grapevine (faster selection and breeding process), virus eradication and rapid clonal propagation. Micropropagation techniques of vitis varieties and cultivars of Vitis vinifera are well-developed and accepted, and nodal segment technique is the most widely used. A special interest is on the achievement of virus-free plants which can be achieved by meristem culture, with or without thermotherapy. Good results were achieved by micrografting, and more recently cryopreservation. However, further research should be done to establish protocols for each technique for the genetic improvement of grapevine.
