Abstract

1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is a compound which brings a revolution in maintaining postharvest fruit quality because of its efficiency on synthesis and negative effects of ethylene. It is found on the market as a product called SmartFresh®, produced by Agrofresh company. Although there aren’t any known negative effects on human health and environmental pollution, its registration hasn’t yet been finalized in all countries, but its relatively low price guarantees that it will be widely used. In order to achieve its full effect, it is necessary to be familiar with conditions and the way of usage. Therefore this paper aims to review all the most important factors that influence the efficiency of 1-MCP in order to give useful guidelines for practice once this compound becomes available in the Republic of Croatia.
