Abstract
Using mulch films in vegetable production has several benefits. The mulch cover protects the soil’s surface from drying out, minimises evaporation and loss of soil moisture, controls weed development and increases the soil temperature. The aim of the research was to confirm the effects of mulch films on weed growth and physical characteristics of soil in asparagus plantations. The data from the field research were analysed by statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) with LSD values at the significance level of P<0.05. By applying the tested mulch materials it is possible to control weed growth in asparagus plantations successfully. The tested mulch films affected water regime positively. Higher water content was measured in mulch variants than in the control variant. Black synthetic film increased the soil temperature. The soil temperature in paper mulch variant was the same or partially lower than in the control variant.
