Abstract

Breeding and genetic work at creation of sorts of winter wheat at the Bc Institute for the breeding and production of plants in Zagreb is a constituent part of the programme for the improvements in the wheat production in Croatia. A very successful activity has been formed by the Bc Institute at the area of breeding winter wheat. The results of that work are well known to the agricultural practice both in Croatia and abroad. Namely, wheat breeders of the Bc Institute-Zagreb have since 1964, when the first sort Vuka was acknowledged, until now, created 81 different sorts of winter wheat. By its genetic potential the fruitfulness of this sort presents top achievements in the selection. Out of 31 sorts acknowledged abroad, some were strong standards (Baranjka and Korona in Hungary), and Marija sort that was acknowledged in 1988 is still a strong standard in the Republic of Croatia. In the Croatian Committee we have also had strong standards (Zlatna dolina and Super zlatna), and among them there is a still highly fruitful and stable sort Sana, acknowledged back in 1983.
