Abstract

In the experiment with activated sludge (1969-1972), by which wasters in the Organo-Chemical Industry (OKI) are dephenolized, the sludge activity and reaction time were determined: 1. at different phenol concentrations (from 100-1850 mg/I), pH = 6-8 and temperatures of 40, 200 and 37 °C during 30 days, and 2. at pH = 0-14, at 37 °C and 300 mg phenol/I during 7 days. The pH values, the most probable number of coliforms, and the total number of bacteria were determined and TTC and resazurln test were done before and after the experiment. The results show that the optimal temperature is 37 °C, when over 90% of phenol in a concentration of 500 mg/I was decomposed (the number of bacteria was 300X106/ml of activated sludge) at pH = 6-8 and NPK 17: 8: 9 in 2 days. At higher phenol concentrations and lower temperature the time of total biodecomposition was very prolonged.
