Abstract

The forced expiratory volume in the first second, forced vital capacity, peak flow rate, and forced expiratory time measured by auscultation over trachea were registered in subjects exposed to cotton dust with a view to determining the sensitivity of each of these tests in detecting acute changes of ventilatory function in the conditions of industrial exposure, The values obtained in all these tests proved significantly reduced over working shift (P < 0.01) the forced expiratory time slowing highest reduction. The highest variability coefficient was observed in the forced expiratory time. The unexpectedly reduced forced expiratory time in exposure to a bronchoconstricting dust is explained by the parallel effect of cotton dust on the forced expiratory volume in the first second and forced vital capacity of which the effect of reduced forced vital capacity on the forced expiratory time proved more pronounced.
