Abstract

Surfinia (Petunia x hybrida), a Petunia cultivar created by crossing in the early 90's of the 20th century is extensively used to decorate gardens, balconies, yards and public spaces. The aim of this study was to determine the most desirable characteristics of substrates for growing Surfinia. The research was carried out on 90 Surfinia 'Snow' cultivar seedlings in a greenhouse of the company Pori (Republic of Slovenia). During our research we measured the height of Surfinia seedlings, flower diameter and number of flowers per plant five times, in three different substrates. Observing the effects of selected substrates on the growth and development of Surfinia cultivars continued for 47 days. The highest average height of seedlings, flower diameter and number of Surfinia flowers per plant was recorded for plants in substrate No. 2 (Neuhaus N8).Obtained results indicated that Surfinia seedlings favoured the commercial substrate Neuhaus N8 with improved properties in combination with humic acid, pH of 5.5-6.5, N 210 mg/l, P 2 O 5 150 mg/l and K 2 O 270 mg/l.
