Abstract

The authors have considered the possibilities of poisoning in galena miners. 233 workers were examined and hematological analyses were performed. The results of blood lead, urinary lead and coproporphyrin analyses are compared with those obtained in the control groups: the inhabitants of Belgrade and the inhabitants of the village Donji Dobric who are not exposed to lead, and the inhabitants of the village Malo Rudare who are exposed to lead fumes and dust. The village M. Rudare is situated about 500 meters from the lead smelting plant. There is a significant difference (P > 0,01) between the means of blood lead, urinary lead and coproporphyrin in the galena miners, the inhabitants of Belgrade and D. Dobric on the one hand, and the inhabitants of the village M. Rudare on the other hand. The possibility of poisoning of galena miners was also considered by the experiments »in vitro«.
