Abstract

The definition of porphyrinuria and porphyria is given, as well as the classification of porphyria according to Watson. The causes of porphyria and porphyrinuria are presented on the basis of Rimington's hypothesis of enzymatic block. Most pronounced symptoms and laboratory findings are described, and the findings in urine, i. e. the characteristic colour of urine, porphobilinogen and other porphyrins are discussed more fully. Detailed instructions are given for the determination, both spectrophotometric and fluorometric, of coproporphyrin, total uroporphyrin (I and III), and uroporphyrin III, as well as of the indirect determination of uroporphyrin I. The results of comparative determination of coproporphyrin, total uroporphyrin and uroporphyrin III are also given. The determination of uroporphyrin have been carried out in two cases of porphyria cutanea tarda, while the experience concerning porphyrinuria is gained on the basis of the observation of numerous cases of lead poisoning.
