Abstract

The role of acetylcholine as a chemical mediator in synaptic transmission is briefly reviewed. After mentioning some historical data, the author gives a short account of the biochemistry and metabolism of acetylcholine, its localisation, site and mode of release, and its reaction with the receptive substance; the site and origine of synaptic potentials are also discussed. Some other theories of synaptic transmission are summarized.
