Abstract

Normal human gut flora is a multifunctional system that has important role in defense from pathogenic enteric organisms. It is principally comprised of colonic bacteria, which reside there in concentrations of 1012 organisms per gram of feces. Anaerobic bacteria are predominant, in 100 times larger quantities than aerobic ones. Antibiotic agents, depending on their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics, have quantitative and qualitative effect on gut flora. These are summarized in this review, regarding therapy with several classes of antimicrobial agents oftenly used in the treatment of urogenital infections (aminopenicillins, cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, azalides and co-trimoxazole). In the process of deciding on antimicrobial therapy, its influence on the gut flora should be contemplated.
