Abstract

Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say.) (CPB) is one of the most important potato pest in many countries. CPB has an amazing ability to adjust to toxicants from different chemical classes by developing a range of different resistance levels to all classes of insecticides applied to its management. More than 300 cases of CPB resistance to 56 insecticides are reported worldwide. Until the mid 90‐ies CPB resistance has been monitored in Croatia and farmers were provided by precise information about the status of specific insecticide. Implementation of insecticides different in mode of action (mainly neonicotinoids) enabled farmers to overcome CPB resistance to organophosphates and pyrethorids. Since that time CPB resistance has not been monitored. Recent repeated failures in CPB control are indicating that CPB might develop resistance to neonicotinoids. Here, we analysed the CRP resistance evolution worldwide and in Croatia. We analysed the potential threat for the development of resistance to neonicotinoids. It is reported that in neighbouring countries CPB already developed resistance to imidacloprid and the same insecticide is widely used in Croatia too. Starting with 2017, Croatian Science Foundation approved the project in which the systematic monitoring of CPB resistance will be conducted over the three years on 15 locations per year. The project goals, objectives and activities are presented.
