Abstract

There are no written traces about the mint and the town of Pelagia.
The name only appears on some coins. Iconographically the coins of Pelagia are closely connected with Damastion, the assumption being that this was a neighbouring tribe that struck coins for its own needs. Iconographic analysis certainly connects these two “towns” situated in Illyria, most probably in the mountain region near a silver mine, but as yet on an unknown area. Besides an iconographic analysis, the author also analyses all the known literature, and gives a metal analysis of coins whose iconography is similar to that of Damastion and Pelagia. The results suggest that the Pelagian mint continued to strike coins in the area of the Damastion mint when the latter stopped work. The author also includes descriptions of Pelagian coins that have so far not been published or presented in scholarly literature.
