Abstract

Dear readers, the papers that we bring in this first issue, volume 13, of Media Research keeping track of the social changes which bring the new interests in the field of media.
Anita Perešin in her paper on “Mass Media and Terrorism” explores the influence of the development of media and new technologies on creating a new paradigm of terrorism. The author explores the main issues on the symbiotic relationship between media and terrorist organizations and the ways in which those organizations exploit and manipulate the media in order to manipulate the public and form national and international politics. However, the media should not become an instrument of terrorism. Their role is to awake the manipulation and to become a weapon in the war against terrorism.
The paper by Josip Čerina on “Mass Media in Leisure Time of Conscripts” is an interesting research on the usage of media in the leisure time of young people during the military service. It brings out the issue of possible samples of (non)usage of mass media in the situation in which the privates live and work. Surveys, on a representative sample of privates, had shown that the privates use TV and radio significantly less then their civil peers, while they read the newspapers approximately the same. Such results can be interpreted by the improper conditions and unsuitable technical equipment of the facilities, which ought to be changed.
Journalism and public relations are the topic of the paper by Ana Tkalac Verčić and Norman Mueller on “Public Relations Influence on Croatian Media: Is There a Difference between the Options of Journalists and Public Relations Professionals?” The paper explores the mutual dependence and the way those two professions are connected in the world of media production. The experts for public relations give to journalists “raw material” and the journalists than use it to cerate the news. That material always goes in the advantage of the client they work for, and the journalists are those who are obliged to recognize the real information and the facts according to the fact that they are not an instrument of the individual benefits but should rather serve the public.
The paper by Mato Brautović on “Protection of Privacy, Intellectual Property and Electronic Business as Indicators of Ethicalness of Online Media in Croatia” brings out the results of the empirical research of the level of ethics of the online media in Croatia in relation to the international standards, and also ascertains many anomalies and disadvantages in that area of protection of privacy and intellectual property.
In the paper on “Media Literacy as Compared to Other Elements of the Informa
tion Literacy Model” the authors Violeta Vidaček Hainš, Valentina Kirinić and Ksenija Pletenac present the results of an interesting research conducted on a sample of pre-school children on the amount of time spent using single media and it shows the way the media and informational literacy influence the formation of competent and awakened media users. In this issue we bring the reviews of the book “Radio – Myth and Information, Dialogue and Democratization” by Nada Zgrabljić Rotar and the book “Produc¬tion and Marketing of the Scene Arts” by Darko Lukić and the reviews and announcements of media happenings.
