Abstract

For some time now, polymers have been standard components for drug design either as excipients or drug packing materials. Polymers have outstanding physical and chemical properties such as molecular weight, viscosity, gelling ability and solubility which largely influence their application in pharmacy and medicine. The application of polymer materials in advanced drug delivery devices like matrix systems, reservoir systems, osmotic pumps, degradation systems and environmentally responsive systems has largely increased in a past few years. The investigation of stucture-property relationship and thorough characterization of polymers is one of the most important conditions for the design of polymer containing drug substances.
