Abstract

The objective of the study was to defi ne the incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer in the Bjelovar-Bilogora County during the 2000-2010 period. Data on the incidence were obtained from the National Cancer Registry, and data on mortality from the database of the National Institute of Public Health. Crude rate was used to describe changes in trends according to sex. The study conducted by analysis using linking points yielded the following trends in the increase of
colorectal cancer in men: incidence EAPC 2.9% and mortality EAPC 2.1% (Croatia as a whole). In the Bjelovar-Bilogora County, the trend of increase in the incidence and mortality remained constant in the last two years, so that in 2012, the Bjelovar-Bilogora County ranked fi rst in Croatia in this issue. In women, the increase in the incidence was not signifi cant. However, the mean annual percentage of changes regarding mortality recorded in the last ten years showed a signifi cant increase by 1.1%. In conclusion, the incidence and mortality rate of colorectal cancer in Croatia are still growing, which is particularly pronounced in Bjelovar-Bilogora County. The increase in mortality rate indicated the need of more effi cient primary prevention and higher response rates within the National Program for Early Detection of Colon Cancer. To improve treatment results, it is necessary to establish accredited centers for colorectal cancer treatment with trained staff and multidisciplinary teams for the treatment and monitoring of colorectal cancer patients.
