Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the
strengthening of glued laminated beams of
tapered curved geometry, which under bending
moment create a complex stress state in which the
tension stress perpendicular to grain is the most
interesting one, having in mind the anisotropic
–orthotropic properties of wood. The procedure
for longitudinal and vertical stresses in accordance
with EN1995 and ASTM standards is made.
Furthermore, the paper presents a method of apex
strengthening with steel bars according to ASTM
standards. The results obtained by comparing
the standards with complex numerical model are
presented. According to obtained results, it can be
concluded that standards very well approximate
the value of stresses, but one should be very
careful when dealing with reinforced beam,
because only by means of numerical modeling,
the value of residual stresses perpendicular to
grain can be obtained. On this basis, the bearing
capacity can be very precisely calculated and
optimization can be made (increase of the
distance between beams or increase of a load).
