Abstract

The paper presents the results of the examination of the frequency of diabetic retinopathy, diagnosed by ophthalmoscopy in 41 juvenile insulin-dependent diabetics with the prepuberal onset of diabetes. The frequency of diabetic retinopathy at that age has been found to be extremely low (4.9 %). It has not been observed before age ten or with diabetes duration shorter than five years. The diagnosed retinal changes pointed to an early and minimal diabetic microangiopathy.
