Surgical therapy of cronic pancreatitis

Abstract
The diagnostics of chronic pancreatitis starts with radiological examinations. Besides the history and clinical examination, endoscopic retrograde cholecystopancreatography (ERCP) has the greatest diagnostic value. In our patients ERCP has been performed operatively since May, 1983. Surgical treatment has been indicated after analyzing the cholangiopancreaticogram and its aim is to enable the drainage of the pancreatic juice and improve the biliary tract. In the period 1985 — 1988, 38 patients with chronic pancreatitis were treated at our Department. Of these, 27 had surgery and 11 were treated conservatively. Having been operated on, the patients had to be on diet and substution therapy for at least two years after the operation. Postoperative results a few years after surgery are good. There was no mortality.
