Abstract

Various approaches are presented in the paper with regard to the definition of reference water levels for the analysis of functional and structural stability requirements in the design of dykes and earthfill dams of retarding basins and water-storage reservoirs. It is cautioned that various methods are used to define reference water levels at the design stage, which results in differing levels of reliability of earthfill dams and dykes. A critical review of current approaches is made, and recommendations are given for a proper approach to the definition of reference flows and water levels for stability analysis.
