Abstract

Two paintings of different subjects by Giuseppe Cesari called Cavaliere (Il Cavalier) d’Arpino (1568 – 1640) were obtained for the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in different periods and under different circumstances: St George Killing the Dragon and St Francis in Ecstasy. The painting St George Killing the Dragon (ill. 1), purchased in 1867 at Roman art market, occupies a rather
prominent place in d’Arpino’s oeuvre.
