Abstract

The author begins with a portrayal of Split at the end of the World War I to illustrate the difficulties connected with the organisation of life there. Under a decade long leadership of Ivo Tartaglia as mayor, Split became the administrative centre of Dalmatia, a modern city, and the main port in the state. The city vas electrified, the port vas enlarged, and by a rail-road the city was connected with the rest of the country. The author also describes other organisational steps that made the city into a cultural centre.
