Abstract

The research conducted with the Croatian displaced persons in Istria and with a group of Istrians who have not experienced the war directly points to major differences on the Post-Traumatic Stress Scale (PTSR), Coping Strategie Scale (COPE) and Relation to close persons Scale (ERAAwC) nine years after the war. The displaced persons still show symptoms of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although their relation to close persons is functional, the traumatic experiences from the war make them more vulnerable to the emotional aspects of the situation they are in. The displaced persons do not want the difficult, traumatic experiences from the war to affect their lives today. Unlike the Examinees who have no war experience and are using the strategies oriented towards problem-solving and who are looking for emotional and social support, the displaced persons continue to use the strategies of escaping the reality, such as behavioural disengagement, denial, self-blame, alcohol and substance use and religion.
