Abstract

Urogenital infections are still an important public health concern. They represent a burden not only for an individual but also for the entire population and the complete health system. With its unique pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, Azithromycin represents a drug of choice for the treatment of numerous sexually transmitted and urogenital infections. This has been corroborated by a number of clinical trials, as well as by the efficacy that azithromycin has demonstrated since its first registration 30 years ago. Chronic chlamydial prostatitis is a new clinical indication for Sumamed. This overview provides recommendations for the use of azithromycin in various urogenital infections. The inclusion of azithromycin in the world's leading guidelines testifies to its importance.
