Abstract

Due to their position, the tibia and fibula are often exposed to trauma, particularly in younger animals. Therefore, it is very important to become familiar with the methods for fracture rehabilitation. This study is based on the use of an external fixator as a simple, effective and often the only method for the treatment of fractures. Modern trends in osteosynthesis include biological approaches and AOVET principles of treatment of fractures such as “minimal invasive osteosynthesis” or
“open but do not touch”. This paper gives a brief overview of the tibia and fibula, their fracture classifications, treatment of fractures with a focus on the external fixator as the method of choice in treatment and its advantages and disadvantages. Reference is also made to the biomechanics of the external fixator as a determining factor for its application.
