Abstract
The Dalmatian is one of the most popular dog breeds. There is no part of the world where this white dog with black spots is unknown. It originates from the Dalmatia region of the Republic of Croatia. Regardless of the fact that Dalmatians are today mostly used as companion and family dogs, its genetic heritage bears the strong blood of the hunter. It is a hound, as indicated by the official classification of Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which places this dog into the sixth group, scent hounds and related breeds. In order to perform its duties during the hunt, this dog needs good exterior traits. There is little data on morphometric parameters of this breed in the available literature. Findejs et al. (1973) cited that the body format index is 110 in bitches and 106 in males, and that head length is 42% of the height at the withers. In order to determine morphometric parameters, we conducted zootechnical measurement of 20 males and 22 bitches of this breed. We measured and analysed 23 exterior parameters, to obtain the current state of exterior parameters in this breed. Based on the obtained data, it may be concluded that the population of Dalmatian dogs carries certain exterior parameters which may be considered less than suboptimal.
